Nordatlantiska oscillationen avser i populärform att "hättan" av ishavsluft som finns över Arktis kan halka snett åt olika håll, och just nu har den halkat ner över oss. Dessa variationer bruka även märkas så att det blir varmare över Nordamerika när det blir kallare hos oss, och tvärtom.

En del av vad som är orsak och verkan mellan detta och Golfstömmens förlopp, i sammanhang av:

är inte lätt att känna sig säker på.

Nedisningen på Norra halvklotet ser dock ut att ha varat samtidigt i Nordamerika och Nordeuropa....

"Surprising Results
Among the many results gleaned from the ice core drillings one result in particular has received the most public attention: the evidence from the ice cores indicate that our climate is not as stable as we had previously assumed. The drillings have shown that once an otherwise stable system is disturbed the climate can change rather quickly.

The ice cores have revealed that during the last ice age the mean temperature changed several times with up to 15 degrees Celsius during an interval of only 40 years.
These results are obviously highly significant at a time where the emission of green house gasses affects the global climate. It is especially alarming if the global climate is capable of reacting in a dramatic fashion with short notice. This is one of the reasons the drillings on Greenland's ice cap will continue. "
